Tether Customer Management

Net revenue retention and churn for customer and finance leaders. A tether is what keeps something from drifting away, and what tells you when it has.

“What is our NRR?” Net revenue retention (NRR), gross revenue retention (GRR) and logo retention side by side, and how far apart they are.
“Is that number real?” Retention recomputed without your biggest expander. One account should not carry the story unchallenged.
“Where is it actually leaking?” Churn, contraction and expansion split by segment and by account, each measured against the same starting base.

The period

One setting, read by every tab

Everything else is derived from the customer list, so there is nothing here that can drift out of step with it.

ARR is annual recurring revenue. What a customer pays you over a year. Use the same ARR definition at both ends. Annualised, committed, billed or recognised. Mixing two of them is invisible here and will corrupt every figure on the page.

The book

Showing a sample book of business so you can see how it works. Type over it, or paste your own.
ARR AT START ARR = annual recurring revenue. What that customer was paying you over a year, as at the first day of the period. This is the base everything is measured against.
ARR AT END What the same customer is paying on the last day. If they left, put 0.
THE TWO ZEROS MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS End of 0 is a churn. Start of 0 is a customer you WON during the period. They are deliberately excluded from NRR and GRR, because those measure the base you began with. A row that is blank is neither, and is held back until you fill it in.
SEGMENT Any label you use. Enterprise, region, product, plan tier. The tool never assumes it knows what your segments mean; it just computes each one separately, which is usually where the real story is.
INCLUDE THE ONES THAT LEFT The most common mistake is pasting only current customers. Retention is a measure of what happened to the base you started with, so the departures are the half that matters.
WHERE TO GET IT Any billing or CRM system will export it: account id, name, segment, and the ARR on two dates. Two exports twelve months apart, joined on the id.
